As a part of our ‘Engage’ Fundraising Program, Supported Employees at our Allambie Heights Employment Services share their workspace environment with volunteers to build understanding, showcase skills and break down social barriers. This program aligned with St Ignatius College Riverview’s service program, where they aim to form young men of consciousness, competence, commitment and compassion by asking them to participate in experiences with people in society that might face different challenges to their own. Our ‘Engage’ Fundraising Program was the perfect opportunity for some year ten students to volunteer to give and not count the cost.

After an orientation and tour of our Allambie Heights Employment Services site, the young men and teachers from St Ignatius worked alongside Sunnyfield Supported Employees on the day’s jobs. From packing and building stock to navigating the environment, they were able to experience a day in the life of a Sunnyfield Supported Employee whilst learning more about disability and the sector. Lunchtime was a highlight, as there was more time for the young men and Supported Employees to socialise and build friendships. The Supported Employees were delighted to have the company.

The year 10 students and teachers spent 4 days at Sunnyfield, and overall, it was a great success, a unique and fantastic way to create an impactful team-building experience. With a bittersweet farewell, the Supported Employees wished their new friends from Saint Ignatius College goodbye, only to be surprised with a delivery of letters in the following weeks.

The young men from St Ignatius College had written very kind, caring letters of gratitude for the Supported Employees.

“Although we were uncomfortable at first, I was forced to step outside my comfort zone in order to make interactions and friendships with your employees. Because of this, I learnt how to interact with people with a disability, making me more patient and encouraging to others.”

“I am forever grateful for this, it has shown me that having a disability doesn’t hold you back in life, and you can still choose your own path in the game that is life”

“This experience has taught me how to see the world in a different way as well as how to better communicate with someone with a disability”

“It was a joy for me to work and talk with the kind workers at Sunnyfield”

“It has touched me when I saw how happy everyone was to see us come in every morning. I am still thankful for the friendships I made with Michelle and Wayne”

“The people at Sunnyfield are extremely hard working and contribute massively to today’s society”

The Supported Employees smiles filled the room with joy and happiness while reading those letters.

We are very thankful for the thoughtful, compassionate young men and teachers of St Ignatius College Riverview and their time spent engaging with the Supported Employees at Allambie Heights. To give your time and not count the cost created such a positive impact on our Sunnyfield Community, we hope you come back to visit soon.

See how our generous donors have made a difference in the lives of people with disability

We’re always in awe of how charitable our community can be. Thanks to our generous donors, we have continued our promise to provide opportunities to people with disability and support them to kick goals and live out their dreams. We’re only halfway through 2021, and we’ve already seen some incredible action, thanks to fundraising efforts.

More accessibility means more adventures

Our Caringbah Short Term Accommodation was able to purchase a Hippocampe all-terrain chair thanks to donations from The Honda Foundation. This specialised wheelchair can go on sand and off-road, allowing clients to access activities and plan adventures they couldn’t previously, creating priceless memories.

Making learning fun

Thanks to Stephen Bali MP and his 2020 Community Building Partnerships grant as well as a donation from Publinc Communities, our Blacktown and Guildford Community Services Hubs purchased and installed a Tovertafel. The interactive technology connects and challenges people with disability to develop and maintain their skills in a fun and playful way. The Tovertafel has been an excellent addition to Blacktown and Guildford’s sensory room, bringing clients together through purposeful play and lighting their faces up with smiles.

Meet our new pop stars

Manly Leagues made a 10-week songwriting workshop possible at our Allambie Heights Community Services Hub with Affinity Music. Music is a fantastic way to stimulate learning and memory. This workshop was led by the clients, deciding on the subject and style of music. Together they wrote an original song, ‘Dancing at the Hub’, and then created a music video with clients singing, dancing and playing the percussion. The dance room featured in the video clip also recently had a makeover thanks to Dee Why RSL, with a kick-ass graffiti wall and mirrors installed, creating a funky space for clients to boogie in.

Mobility is key

We purchased a brand new wheelchair-modified van for our children’s Short Term Accommodation service in Caringbah thanks to Clayton Utz Foundation, ASX Refinitiv Charity Foundation, and individual donors. The service uses the van to pick up and drop off clients from school, home, or our services, and the many social activities in their weekly programs, including going to the beach, picnics and walks, movies, indoor play centre and more.

Enhancing learning through technology

A grant from Glencore mining company enabled the purchase of three iPads for our Singleton Community Services Hub. The iPads are being used as part of our Skills for Life program, supporting people with disability to build their skills in budgeting, cooking and road safety. Singleton client, Taylor, says he “loves learning new skills on the iPad.”

We’d like to say a big thank you to the amazing support of our donors. During COVID-19 we were able to successfully deliver regular virtual music and movement sessions at Sunnyfield Hubs all over NSW.

Some may ask what this means for those boogie woogies? Well, our talented musician from Affinity Music performed on a weekly Zoom session, enabling fun and energetic virtual music and movement sessions that were a rocking success!

There’s nothing better than to hear the tapping of a tambourine or see the smiles from ear to ear.

Raising funds to support people with disability with activity kits whilst self-isolating at home

This is a difficult time for all of us and people with disability are facing additional challenges during the COVID-19 crisis.

Just like most of the population, the people with disability that Sunnyfield support are no longer able to go about their regular daily routines. Many people with intellectual disability do not have the same capability to occupy themselves when not in a regular or supported routine for extended periods of time.

We need your help to support Sunnyfield clients

Providing these vital daily, lifestyle, recreational and educational resources for people with disability at home are not funded by the NDIS.

Donations will be used to fund materials and program resources such as:

  • Arts and Crafts supplies
  • Sports equipment
  • Gardening tools and materials
  • Musical items
  • Games
  • Cooking utensils and essentials

Every bit counts

We appreciate this is a difficult time for many families and not everyone is in a position to donate. If you are able to make a donation, we would be most appreciative of your support.

100% of your donation will be used to purchase resources to support people with disability with these recreational and educational resources during this challenging time.

Sometimes it’s the little things like a new paint set, a herb garden or puzzle that can make the world of difference. Thank you for your consideration.

Sunnyfield Disability Services were delighted to receive a Community Building Partnership Grant of over $9,000 from local MP Prue Car to construct a shade sail and provide outdoor protection at their Australian Disability Enterprises site in Mt Druitt.

“I’m thrilled to have delivered grant funding for this project through the Londonderry Community Building Partnership. The shade sail will be a valued addition heading into summer”, said Prue Car.

Peter has been with Sunnyfield for 42 years and loves his job at Mt Druitt. He is a general all round handyman, always looking out for everyone’s safety and wellbeing on the job and always willing to help others complete tasks. When asked about the new shade sail, Peter said “it has made it much cooler and nicer to sit outside now. Thank you to the company for installing it”.

The Mt Druitt site provides meaningful employment for 58 people with disability. Sunnyfield support people to learn new life skills, gain confidence, earn a wage and develop career opportunities all in the context of a commercial environment.

Sunnyfield Disability Services is pleased to announce that Vuly Play is generously donating an Ultra Medium Trampoline (valued over $849) to our Tamworth Community Services Hub! In addition to facilitating hours of safe outdoor fun – this brand-new trampoline will provide a range of health benefits to our Sunnyfield community!
In fact, bouncing on a trampoline offers a low impact form of exercise that can assist in the development of useful skills for everyone. Trampolines can be used by people of all ages, including those who are differently abled. Apart from being fun, regularly bouncing on a trampoline can:

  • Build muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness,
  • Improve flexibility and core stability,
  • Enhance motor skills – such balance and coordination,
  • Develop focus, attention and concentration,
  • Assist with sensory and emotional regulation,
  • Support positive social skills such as communication and sharing,
  • Provide a creative outlet to invent and try new games!

Vuly Play is one of Australia’s favourite manufacturer of trampolines and outdoor play equipment. The team at Vuly Play prides themselves on exceptional design, comprehensive safety features and superior manufacturing from Vuly Play monkey bars to custom swings. We would like to thank Vuly Play again for their generous donation, and we’re very excited to see the benefits this trampoline will offer to our community hub!

Sunnyfield Supported Employees’ William and Max were honorary guests for the evening as they celebrated the Vivid festival in style. They loved being part of the event, and spent the night dancing, drawing a raffle, giving a speech and making loads of new friends.
