Webinar for people with intellectual disability

The Department of Health is doing a webinar about the COVID-19 vaccine for people with intellectual disability on Wednesday 1 September 2021.

How to participate

The Department of Health is doing a webinar about the Covid-19 vaccine for people with intellectual disability. The webinar is for people with an intellectual disability and supporters.

The webinar is a chat between:

  • Tara Elliffe, a self-advocate from NSW
  • Dr Nick Lennox who works for the Department of Health
  • Jamie Bannister from Inclusion Australia will also help with questions and other things.

You will be able to ask Tara and Nick questions about the COVID vaccine and people with an intellectual disability.

Information and facts about COVID-19 and what it is.

The most recently discovered Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new virus that can cause an infection in people, including severe respiratory illness.

What are the symptoms?

According to NSW Health, the most common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Breathing difficulties such as breathlessness
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue and tired

Reducing your risk

NSW Health has advised:

  • Wash hands often with soap and running water, for at least 20 seconds. Dry with paper towel or hand dryer
  • Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or elbow when you cough or sneeze.
  • Continue healthy habits: exercise, drink water, get plenty of sleep

If I feel unwell

NSW Health has also advised:

  • Isolate yourself at home if you feel unwell
  • Phone your GP if you need medical attention
  • If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care immediately
  • Follow the directions of your local health authority

New measures to support NDIS participants and providers through COVID-19.

The Hon Stuart Robert MP Minister for the NDIS, announced on 21 March support for NDIS participants, including:

• NDIS plans extended up to 24 months
• Face-to-face planning shifted to telephone meetings (where possible)
• Provide flexibility to shift capacity-building funding to core support funding
• Monitor service gaps to ensure essential disability services are available
• Outreach to high-risk participants to ensure continuity of supports.

The Minister also announced financial assistance for disability support providers to help them remain viable and to retain staff. Sunnyfield will work closely with the NDIA to implement these changes and continue supporting clients.
